Sundown in the City
Last night I went to Sundown in the City @ Market Square. The person performing was Imogen Heap. She was a little weird. She played a bunch of sythesizers. The cool thing was it was just her on stage doing it all.
I went with my good friend, Pierce LaMacchia, and someone from work.
Sundown is always a interesting experience. It is a place where sin runs rampant. It was really sad to see people indulging in the flesh like that. It reminds me of what Paul describes in Romans 1 and 1 Corinthians 6. It really showed me how ugly sin really is. Sometimes we don't see sin for what it really is, an offence to God. Jerry Bridges puts it best in "The Gospel For Real Life.":
It is here that we begin to realize the seriousness of sin. All sin is rebellion against God's authority, a despising of His Law, and a defiance of His commands. W.S. Plumer wrote, "We never see sin aright until we see it as against God. All sin is against God in this sense that it is His Law that is broken, His authority that is despised, His government that is set at naught (nothingness).
Sundown helped reinforce that idea. It reminded me that my sin is no different then the sin I saw last night.
Sundown did help me see a gift that God has given me, my sisters in Christ. What a gift you all are to us poor guys! As I saw guys and girls giving themselves away to each other, I was reminded of how Godly my sisters are and how committed to purity they are. I saw the big contrast between the world and these girls, and it is a huge contrast! I also was reminded of how wise and Godly my parents were in keeping straight in line and not letting me go astray.
Now, this is for all the RELAY guys that read my blog: LOOK AROUND YOU!!! LOOK AT THE GIFT GOD HAS GIVEN TO YOU! HE HAS GIVEN YOU GODLY SISTERS AND GODLY PARENTS! YOU WILL NOT EASILY FIND THIS AROUND YOU WHEN YOU GET TO COLLEGE!
You are in a unique position as homeschoolers in that the only people you have to interact with during the schooltime is your family and people from Church. Do you see what a gift God has given you? He has sovereignly put you in a Godly family and sovereignly put you in an amazing Church!
Just a few thoughts from someone a little bit older...

I like to go to Sundown. It's not bad in and of itself. Sometimes everything around gets to much. It was a good show though, Sundown brings in a lot of good artists.
I did have a little bit of a conviction about Sundown (as shown in the post) so I probably won't go again unless it is someone I know is really talented or really like the artists. There are about 2-3 of those acts every year. I probably won't go just for the heck of it unless a bunch of VFC people are going and I can hang with them, it's always safer that way.

Matthew, it sounded like you spoke from experience when counseling the Relay guys that they will not have this around them when they get to college. You still have that Matthew, and you have experienced very little of the temptation that many times come in college.
Matthew, do you realize that you have barely been removed from that situation at all? True, you aren't with your parents and receiving their counsel all the time anymore, but really, you still live at home and you go to a community college. If you want to kow what it is like to be seperated from the counsel of your parnets, go to a different city and live in the dorms.
Matthew, in your situation you are still protected from many, many temptations, and you still can go to your father for wisdom every night. Do not think of it as being harder than it was, but rather so much safer than what it might be.
